Academic Year

The academic year is divided into two semesters, a fall/winter semester from the middle of September to the end of February and a spring/summer semester from the mid-March to the end of July.

Types of Instruction

There are three basic forms of instruction:

  1. Vorlesungen are lectures in which the students' role is mainly to listen and take in what is being taught; questions are usually left to end of the session, unless the lecturer invites questions or comments.
  2. Seminars require the students' active participation, sometimes presentations are part of the course work.
  3. Oberseminare (advanced seminars) are for advanced students in their final year.

A Tutorium is an additional informal group tutorial covering what has been learned in a lecture, conducted by a senior student.

We strongly advise our exchange students to attend every session. Please participate actively, contribute to the sessions, and ask questions if you did not understand what was said. Introduce yourself to the lecturers as an exchange student.

Exams

Nearly all courses are concluded with a written exam at the end of the semester and grades will be given. Please register for each exam with the Departmental Examination Office (Prufungsamt). The period for registration and the examination date (at the end of the semester) will be announced by the Examination Office and the dates will be published on the Internationals board.

In some courses you will also be asked to do a presentation or hand in a longer essay. These also count towards the final course grade.

At the end of each semester, a transcript of records, listing all the exams a student has taken as well as the grades, will be sent to the International Office of the respective home university.

Credit Points under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

All the BA and MA programmes have been awarded credit points which are identical to the ECTS credit points. These are listed in the course structure schedules for each degree programme.

The Diplom degree programmes do not carry any ECTS credit points.
